The "Untreated" Premium: Why it Matters

In a market flooded with lab-grown alternatives and chemically treated stones, the true value of a gemstone lies in its provenance. A natural, unheated sapphire or untreated ruby retains immense investment value because it is exactly as nature made it.

Treatments such as glass filling, extreme heat, or irradiation can enhance a stone's appearance but drastically reduce its long-term value. Always ask for disclosure.

How to Tell if a Sapphire is Natural

Identifying a natural sapphire without laboratory equipment can be challenging, but there are key indicators:

The only 100% reliable method is a certification from a trusted gemological lab like GRS, GIA, or IGI.

Untreated vs. Treated Ruby

Rubies are among the most heavily treated gemstones on the market. Over 90% of rubies are heated to improve color and clarity. An untreated ruby is exceptionally rare and commands a premium price.

When purchasing, specifically look for "No indication of thermal enhancement" on the lab report. Glass-filled rubies should be avoided by investors, as the lead glass can degrade over time.

Emerald (Panna): Spotting Natural vs. Treated Stones

Nearly all emeralds on the market — natural or synthetic — are treated with oil or resin to fill surface-reaching fractures and improve clarity. This is an accepted industry practice, but the degree of treatment matters enormously to value.

Always request the lab report's "clarity enhancement" or "treatment" field specifically for emeralds — it's the single most important line for this particular gemstone.

Rudraksha: Understanding "Mukhi" and Authenticity

A Rudraksha's "mukhi" refers to the number of natural vertical lines (facets) running down the bead's surface — this determines its traditional significance in Vedic practice, from the common 5 Mukhi to the rare 1 Mukhi.

For rare mukhi counts especially, a lab certificate verifying natural line formation is worth the additional cost.

How Gemstones Are Recommended in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology, each of the nine celestial bodies (Navagraha) is associated with a specific gemstone — Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Ruby for the Sun, and so on. A gemstone is typically recommended after reviewing an individual's birth chart (Kundli) to identify a planet that is weak, afflicted, or positioned in a way that could benefit from strengthening.

This is a specialized consultation, not a generic "your zodiac sign wears this stone" recommendation — the same zodiac sign can call for different gemstones depending on the exact birth time, date, and place. Because an incorrect gemstone can be counterproductive in this tradition, a proper consultation with a qualified astrologer or gemologist before purchase is strongly advised rather than self-selecting based on sun sign alone.

Understanding Carat Weight and Pricing

A carat is a unit of weight (200 milligrams), not size — two stones of the same carat weight can look different in size depending on the gemstone's density and cut. Price per carat is not linear: a 3-carat stone of a given quality is usually priced significantly higher per carat than a 1-carat stone of the same quality, since larger clean natural stones are exponentially rarer.

When comparing prices, always compare like-for-like: same gemstone type, similar clarity grade, similar treatment status (unheated vs. heated), and similar origin — price-per-carat numbers are only meaningful within those constraints.
